
On the 26th of July, 2024, the teacher trainees of Kannur Salafi B.Ed College (2023-25 batch) along with Faculties , Ms. Sudha M and Ms. Vijisha CP, visited Thanal Rehabilitation Centre. The visit was part of their practical learning experience aimed at understanding the dynamics of special education. The group was warmly welcomed by Mr. Shaji, the Principal of Thanal Rehabilitation Centre. Mr. Shaji extended his greetings and expressed his enthusiasm about the interaction with the teacher trainees. Ms. Gopika, a Special Educator at the centre, provided a comprehensive overview of the school’s operations. She elaborated on the diverse needs of the disabled children enrolled at Thanal and the methods employed to address their educational requirements. Ms. Gopika highlighted the structure of the classes and the curriculum, stressing the importance of integrating extra-curricular activities into the learning process to foster holistic development.
Following the briefing, the teacher trainees were divided into small groups and paired with special educators. This hands-on interaction allowed them to observe and participate in ongoing classes, gaining practical insights into the teaching methodologies employed for students with special needs. In a gesture of support, the teacher trainees presented a monetary contribution to Mr. Shaji. This amount was intended to cover the cost of snacks for the children on that day, reflecting their goodwill and commitment to the welfare of the students at Thanal.
The visit was a valuable learning experience for the teacher trainees as their pre-internship programme. It provided them with a practical perspective on special education, enriching their understanding of the challenges and strategies involved in teaching children with disabilities. The interaction with the special educators and the support provided to the centre underscored the trainees’ dedication to making a positive impact in the field of education.
