Interview with School Counselor

The Guidance and Counselling elective students of Kannur Salafi B.Ed College organized an educational visit to Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS), Chattukapara, on 11th February 2026 at 2:00 PM. The visit aimed to provide practical exposure to the functioning of school counselling services and to understand the professional responsibilities of a school counselor.The team consisted of Ms. Sudha M, faculty member, and 20 Guidance and Counselling elective students. The school authorities extended a warm welcome to the group and facilitated an interactive session with the School Counselor, Ms. Jasna K.K.

During the session, Ms. Jasna K.K. provided a comprehensive overview of the importance of counselling in schools. She emphasized that counselling plays a crucial role in addressing students’ academic, emotional, behavioral, and social challenges. She explained that in the present educational scenario, students face various pressures related to studies, peer relationships, family expectations, and personal identity. School counselling helps students develop self-awareness, emotional stability, decision-making skills, and resilience.Ms. Jasna also elaborated on the different types of counselling services provided in the school, including individual counselling, group counselling, career guidance, and crisis intervention. She highlighted the significance of early identification of problems and maintaining confidentiality and trust in the counsellor–student relationship. She shared practical strategies for building rapport with students and creating a safe and supportive environment.

The session became more engaging when Ms. Jasna shared her personal experiences in dealing with students facing anxiety, academic stress, behavioral issues, and family-related concerns. She discussed real-life case scenarios (without disclosing identities) and explained how patience, empathy, active listening, and collaboration with teachers and parents contribute to successful counselling outcomes. Her experiences provided valuable insights into the realities and challenges of working as a school counselor.

The students actively participated in the interaction, asking questions about career opportunities in counselling, ethical considerations, record-keeping practices, and collaboration with school staff. Ms. Sudha M expressed gratitude to the school authorities and Ms. Jasna K.K. for providing such a meaningful and informative session.

The visit proved to be a highly enriching experience for the elective students, as it bridged theoretical knowledge with practical exposure. It enhanced their understanding of professional counselling practices in a school setting and inspired them to approach their future roles with empathy and responsibility.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Nzla K P, and appreciation to GHSS Chattukapara for their cooperation and support.
