Kannur Salafi B.Ed College, under the auspices of the Literary and Readers Club, organised a programme in connection with International Literacy Day on 8 September 2026 at 10.00 AM. The programme was organised with the objective of creating awareness about the importance of literacy, reading habits and the role of literature in personal and social development.
The celebration provided an enriching platform for student-teachers to engage with different forms of literary expression and to develop a deeper appreciation for reading and storytelling. The theme of the programme, “A Secret Voice Awaits…”, created curiosity among the participants and highlighted the idea that books and literature contain voices, experiences and ideas waiting to be discovered.
As part of the programme, a talk on literacy by Rahitha was organised. The session focused on the significance of literacy in empowering individuals and communities. It also highlighted how literacy extends beyond the ability to read and write and contributes to critical thinking, communication skills, lifelong learning and active participation in society.
A storytelling session was another major component of the celebration. It provided an opportunity for the participants to experience the power of stories as a means of communication, imagination and learning. The session encouraged students to appreciate storytelling as an effective educational strategy that can be used in classrooms to make learning more engaging and meaningful.
The programme also included a Book Review Session, which encouraged students to read books critically and share their reflections with others. Through the session, participants were able to express their opinions about books, discuss their themes and characters, and recognise the value of reading in broadening one’s knowledge and perspective.
The International Literacy Day programme was particularly relevant to the student-teachers, as reading, communication and literary appreciation are essential qualities for effective teachers. The activities helped the participants understand the importance of developing a strong reading culture among learners and encouraged them to promote reading and literacy in their future classrooms.
The celebration successfully combined awareness, literary appreciation and active participation. The talk on literacy, storytelling session and book review made the programme informative, creative and engaging. It also strengthened the activities of the Literary and Readers Club and encouraged students to cultivate reading habits and explore the world of books.
